How Can severe Insomnia Be Treated?

I have severe chronic insomnia. Zopiclone didn t work. Ativan at 1 mg didn t work. I am now trying zolpidem or promethazine. The doctor gave me both to try but not in one night because I have difficulty getting to the doctor. My heart rate is rather high for the past several days I haven t been sleeping. I am wondering which one would be best to lower heart rate for tonight? Thank-you

Hi,

I would suggest for you to try first Zolpidem as long as it is less possible to cause arrhytmias, if this is your concern. Regarding heart beat rate, Zolpidem is reported to cause sometimes just palpitations (which is only the feeling of fast heart beat) instead of Promethazine which may cause either tachycardi or bradycardia.

Anyway, in your case I would suggest to start a antidepressant to treat your chronic insomnia. In any case you should consult your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olsi Taka,
